2009
Driver of the Month Award
It takes a lot of hard work to qualify for Van Operator of the Month because the operator must excel in all of their duties. The qualifications include:
- upholding the commitments of the Customer Service Pledge,
- cooperating with UVL Operations in all matters,
- accumulating a qualifying amount of miles operated,
- driving safely in compliance with all federal regulations and company safety policies/procedures,
- projecting a positive image, and
- experiencing a low cargo claims ratio
Of the 110 awards issued this year, Chipman drivers won 11 times. And, we contributed approximately 30 drivers to United’s 5, 200 total drivers (i.e. less than 0.5%), we won 10% of the total awards issued in 2009. That’s not a bad ratio.

Highway Hero
The TCA (Truckload Carriers Association) bestows the Highway Angel recognition to award a driver's “good deeds”, ranging from simple acts of kindness to heroic life-saving efforts.
On Feb. 20, our driver, Junichi Shimizu was driving his tractor-trailer westbound along State Route 12 in California, when a silver car traveling eastbound crashed into a black sedan in front of him. With the silver car bursting into flames, Shimizu pulled over and ran to help the victim, breaking the glass and pulling the driver out to safety.
