When you're planning your move, it's important to know how to practice sustainability while you're getting everything together before you start packing, when you're in route, and while unpacking. If you practice moving green, you will save money and help the environment at the same time. Which is a win-win for you and the planet!

1. Create Your Action Plan

When you're getting ready to move into your new place of business or home, make sure that you have an action plan in place.  Are you going to hire a moving company? Do you have labeled boxes? Have you asked your friends or family to help you? Start planning before you begin moving so you can save on time, money, and gas. Consider how you'd like to begin packing and end unpacking. Try to make every step of the process as easy as it can possibly be!

2. Out with the Cardboard & In with the Reusable Bins

Try not to use traditional cardboard boxes to pack. Pick greener options like reusable moving bins and crates. You can find these containers at your local market or hardware store. The best part about these containers is after you use them for packing, you can reuse them as storage containers for seasonal clothes, holidays decorations or important documents.

3. Donate or Sell Your Extra Belongings

Separate items you can donate or sell; the heavier you pack your moving truck the more effort and fuel you will waste. While you are packing, you might notice that you do not wear several outfits any more or even have the use for certain items. This also includes foods like canned items that you do not want to transport to your new home. Donate all of your extra items to your nearest food bank or Goodwill.

4. Plan Your Driving Route – The Less Stops the Better

Before you put the vehicle in drive make sure that you've considered how long it's going to take to get to your new place. Think about if you'll have to make back and forth stops to your old home and if you need to make stops on the way up. By minimizing your stops along the way, you save on gas and lower the amount of carbon released into the air.

5. Take Advantage of Self Storage

To prevent those back and forth drives during your moving day, take advantage of self-storage. This is a perfect way to put up some items and furniture that you might not need right away. This may or may not be a good option for you, but it is a good thing to consider when planning your move.

6. Recycle Your Left-Over Packaging Material

When you've unpacked and put all of your empty packaging boxes in a pile you should consider two things. You could recycle all the cardboard boxes you used, or you could save them for future use. Either way, you are recycling or reusing them which is great for the environment!

7. Partner with An Eco-Conscious Mover
