What to Know Before Moving From The US to Auckland
For most West Coast to Auckland households, ocean freight is the answer. A shared LCL load runs roughly five to eight weeks door to door from the West Coast, and a dedicated FCL container runs about four to six weeks. Air freight is available for a small "unaccompanied baggage" shipment that needs to arrive in the first few weeks, but full-household air freight is rare because the cost multiplies quickly.
New Zealand offers a household effects concession that lets returning residents and new arrivals import used personal and household goods free of duty and GST, provided the goods were personally owned and used overseas and the importer holds qualifying residence authorisation. Details and the required Unaccompanied Personal Baggage Declaration (form NZCS 218) are on the New Zealand Customs Service household effects page. New or unused goods, alcohol, and tobacco fall outside the concession and are dutiable.
Biosecurity is where New Zealand is famously strict. MPI screens every household shipment for pests, seeds, soil, and plant or animal material, and inspects outdoor gear, wicker, bamboo, garden tools, bicycles, hiking boots, camping equipment, and wooden items closely. Anything with residual soil or organic residue can be held for cleaning, fumigation, or destruction at the importer's cost. Our origin crews clean and pre-inspect flagged categories at pack-out so shipments move through Auckland clearance without avoidable delays.
Pets add months to any Auckland plan. Cats and dogs from the United States need microchipping, a current rabies vaccination, a rabies antibody titre test drawn well in advance of travel, a pre-export health certificate endorsed by USDA APHIS, and an MPI import permit, plus at least 10 days in an approved quarantine facility on arrival. Most families start the pet paperwork six months before their target move date. General guidance on bringing goods and animals is on the NZ government's what you can and cannot bring into NZ page.
Most Chipman customers arrive on an Accredited Employer Work Visa, a Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa, or a partner or family category visa, all documented at Immigration New Zealand's Skilled Migrant Category page. Vehicles can be imported, but right-hand-drive rules, compliance, and emissions standards make it complicated enough that most customers sell the car on the West Coast and buy locally.
