Your Trusted Movers for Spain Relocations

Moving to Spain is a different kind of project than a move across the country. It involves ocean freight (or air freight for smaller shipments), Spanish and EU customs clearance, transit measured in weeks rather than days, and coordinated delivery through a local partner who knows the neighborhood, the building, and the parking rules. Chipman manages all of it. As an award winning mover and a FIDI-accredited international member, we tap a partner base that reaches every major Spanish city, so your West Coast origin and Spanish destination are managed as one project.

Our local service centers handle origin work directly, so the crew who packs your home anywhere on the west coast is our trusted teammember, not a subcontractor. From there we coordinate the ocean leg out of Long Beach, the Port of Oakland, or Sea-Tac, customs entry at your Spanish port, and final door delivery through our FIDI partner in Madrid or Barcelona.

Serving Cities Throughout Spain

Chipman handles residential moves from the West Coast to Spain's largest metros. The two most frequent distinations are Madrid and Barcelona, pulling different profiles of American movers...and the logistics differ too.

Moving to Madrid

Madrid is Spain's capital and economic core, and it's the most common Spanish destination for West Coast professionals relocating for corporate assignments, remote work, or family reasons. Shipments arrive by ocean at the Port of Valencia or the Port of Barcelona, clear customs, and truck inland to the capital. Valencia is often the shorter overland leg; Barcelona is common when routings favor northern Mediterranean services. Your coordinator picks the routing that fits your schedule and shipment size.

Our US-to-Madrid customers most often settle in central and near-north neighborhoods. Salamanca draws executives and families who want the classic upscale address. Chamberí offers a Madrileño residential feel and a short walk to the center. Chamartín is popular with families relocating for jobs in the northern business district and for its international-school access. Retiro appeals to households that want to live next to the city's signature park, and Justicia (which includes Chueca) attracts younger professionals who want walkable central-city life. Families with kids and a preference for suburban living often head north to La Moraleja for detached homes and green space. Each neighborhood has its own building stock and delivery rules, so our destination partner scouts the address in advance.

Moving to Barcelona

Barcelona is Spain's Mediterranean capital and its most international city, a magnet for West Coast households drawn by climate, coastline, and a lifestyle-forward move. Shipments arrive at the Port of Barcelona itself, one of the busiest container ports in the Mediterranean, and clear customs at the same facility. That direct port-to-door routing typically shaves a few days off a Valencia entry.

Our US-to-Barcelona customers settle across a range of neighborhoods depending on lifestyle. Eixample is the geometric grid at the heart of the city and the default landing spot for expats who want walkable central living and Modernista architecture. Gràcia has a village-within-the-city feel and independent shops, popular with creative professionals and families who want character over polish. Sarrià and Sant Gervasi in the upper city attract families relocating for jobs, with quieter streets, larger apartments, and international schools. El Born in Ciutat Vella pulls households who want medieval streets and a dense restaurant scene. Poblenou, on the coastal edge of the 22@ tech district, is where remote workers and startup professionals are landing for its balance of beach access and loft housing. Barcelona's older buildings often have narrow stairwells and permit-restricted parking, so our partner arranges building access, lift services, and municipal permits in advance.

What to Know Before Moving From The US to Spain

Ocean freight is the standard for a full household move to Spain. Full container load (FCL) service to Barcelona or Valencia typically runs three to five weeks door to door; less-than-container-load (LCL) shared service runs four to eight weeks because it waits for consolidation on both ends. Air freight is available for smaller, high-priority shipments and lands in days rather than weeks, at a materially higher per-pound cost.

Spanish customs treats an inbound household move under the traslado de residencia (transfer of residence) regime. New residents from outside the EU can generally import used household goods with a franquicia, meaning relief from import duties and Spanish VAT, provided the goods have been owned and used at your prior residence for at least six months and you apply within twelve months of establishing residence in Spain. Requirements are published by the Agencia Tributaria on its transfer of residence exemption page. You'll need your NIE, a padrón (municipal registration), a valued Spanish-language inventory, and proof of prior US residence. Chipman's FIDI partner in Spain handles the customs filing.

Most West Coast movers to Spain arrive on a residence visa. The Non-Lucrative Visa, the Digital Nomad Visa, and student or work-sponsored visas are the common paths; the Consulate of Spain in Los Angeles publishes the Non-Lucrative Visa requirements for California and other western states. Pets travel under EU rules: for dogs and cats from the US, an ISO microchip, current rabies vaccination, and a USDA-endorsed EU health certificate issued within ten days of travel. Vehicles can be imported with duty relief under the traslado de residencia regime, but most West Coast movers sell in the US and buy locally in Spain.

Long Distance and International Moving Services

From wherever you start on the West Coast to wherever you land in Spain, Chipman provides complete international relocation services. Every move is unique, and we build a free, itemized quote around your origin, destination, and schedule.

Set Your Pickup and Ocean-Sailing Dates

You choose when your crew packs and loads, and your coordinator matches the container to a sailing that lines up with your Spanish arrival. Expedited air freight is available when the calendar demands it.

Origin Storage When Timing Slips

If your Spanish housing isn't ready when your West Coast move-out date lands, Chipman can hold your shipment in secure origin storage before it sails, so your goods aren't sitting in a warehouse in Spain while your visa or lease finalizes.

Sealed and Tracked in Transit

FCL shipments travel in a container reserved for your household, sealed at origin and opened at destination for customs and delivery. LCL shipments are individually inventoried, tagged, and tracked through consolidation, ocean transit, and deconsolidation in Spain. Full-Value Protection is available on international shipments to cover your belongings if the unexpected happens.

Full-Service International Moves

Chipman is more than a team of heavy lifters. Our international service scope is built for the realities of a Spain move.

  • Origin Appliance Disconnect: disconnection of washers, dryers, and refrigerators at your West Coast home. US appliances generally don't reconnect in Spain (220V, different water and gas fittings), so most households sell locally.

  • Specialty Crating: export-grade crating for artwork, glass, chandeliers, wine collections, and other high-value items.

  • Electronics Prep: removal of wall-mounted TVs and disassembly of entertainment systems, computers, and networking gear for overseas transit.

  • Auto Transport (Optional): door-to-port vehicle shipping under the traslado de residencia regime; most movers sell in the US instead.

  • Destination Unpacking: our FIDI partner in Madrid or Barcelona handles unpack, debris removal, and settle-in support after customs release.

International Moves Since 1939

Since 1939, Chipman Relocation has been the trusted partner for US families relocating across the country and across oceans. Our Spain moves have delivered households to Salamanca apartments in central Madrid, family homes in La Moraleja, Eixample flats in Barcelona, Poblenou lofts, and hillside houses in Sarrià and Sant Gervasi. Every move is different, and we plan each one from the ground up around your origin city, destination neighborhood, visa timeline, and customs paperwork.
